Knitting a Scarf: Woven Stitch Pattern

A Great Find

I used to have the most wonderful knitting stitch dictionary, with color photos of hundreds of patterns, with the knitting directions. The book is called "The Harmony Guide to Knitting Stitches," and I just recently found a used copy on Amazon, and I ordered it right away. Looking through it I feel the old excitement, the possibilities there are in knitting needles and yarn, all the different things you can knit. So I decided to make a scarf using the Woven Stitch pattern.

The Pattern

The thing about knitting scarves is that usually gauge, needle size and yarn size don't really matter. I am using some baby alpaca from my stash, and a size 7 circular needle because that's what's handy at the moment.

Cast on 38 stitches.

Knit 6 rows in seed stitch. Row one: Knit one, purl one across the row. Row two: Purl one, knit one across the row.

Continue in seed stitch for the first six and last six stitches of each row until the end of the scarf. Knit the pattern on the 26 stitches in the middle.

The pattern is as follows:

Row 1:  Knit

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: K2, *P2, K2; repeat from * to the end

Row 4: P2, *K2, P2; repeat from * to the end

Row 5: Knit

Row 6: Purl

Row 7: P2, *K2, P2; repeat from * to the end

Row 8: K2, *P2, K2; repeat from * to the end

Repeat these 8 rows over the 26 pattern stitches in the middle and remember to knit the first six and last six stitches of each row in the seed stitch pattern.

When the scarf is as long as you want it to be, or you are nearly out of yarn, end the pattern on Row 6. Knit six more rows in the seed stitch pattern which finishes the border. Bind off. Weave in loose ends.

The pink area is the pattern. Repeat the pattern in the pink area as many times as you like, to make the scarf as long as you like. The white area is the border in seed stitch. K=knit, blank squares are purled.
